Dynamic composition and a unique viewpoint are the hallmarks of Karen Israel’s pastel paintings. She is influenced by the light and mood of the subject and lets those elements dictate her approach. These subjects are rendered with a strong appreciation for the rigors of formal design coupled with a fearless array of color choices.

Karen enjoys teaching pastel as much as she enjoys painting. She conducts many teaching demonstrations and workshops throughout the United States.

In the spring of 2020, Karen has been invited to participate in “Pastels of the World in Bourbonnais” honoring American Women pastelists.  Her pastels will be on display through June and she will be conducting a demo and workshop at the Chateau de Louviere. In addition, Practique Des Arts will feature this Exhibition; Karen’s process and her work will be included.

Karen’s work was featured in Practique Des Arts, July 2018. Among her many awards, she placed Third in the Pastel 100 in 2012 and 2014 and has received an Honorable Mention in this same competition in 2018 and 2020.  Karen is a member of the Salmagundi Club, Master Circle Recipient with IAPS and currently serves on the Board of the Pastel Society of America where she has earned the title of Master Pastelist.
