Hybrid Weekly Studio Class

Color and composition form the foundation of strong, expressive painting. In this ongoing hybrid studio class, Maceo Mitchell helps artists deepen their understanding of how these two elements work together to create clarity, mood, and visual impact. With an emphasis on observation, thoughtful design, and sensitivity to color relationships, students explore ways to move beyond simply recording a subject toward creating more intentional, cohesive paintings.

Working primarily in pastel, though other compatible media are welcome, participants may paint from still life, reference images, or personal subject matter. Individual feedback, group discussion, and instructor guidance create a supportive environment where artists at a range of experience levels can strengthen their skills and artistic voice.

Instructor Bio

Maceo Mitchell PSA MP HFH is an internationally recognized pastel artist known for his distinctive still life paintings and sophisticated use of color. After studying art in Detroit, he earned his BFA from Wayne State University and pursued graduate work at the University of Iowa. A respected educator for many years, he has taught widely and has played an active role in pastel education through his long association with the Pastel Society of America. His work reflects a deep commitment to observation, color harmony, and thoughtful composition.

Materials and Studio Setup

• Pastel is recommended, though other painting or drawing media may be used with instructor approval
• A selection of pastels or preferred medium and appropriate supports
• Reference photos, still life material, or personal subject matter
• Basic studio supplies appropriate to your chosen medium
• Additional guidance will be provided prior to the first class
